Today Jainism is largely concentrated in parts of Mumbai, as well as in the larger cities of the Indian peninsula. But Jainism is actually one of the world oldest religions, and it originally began in 7th BC in eastern India. During this time the 24 historical figures of Jainism who were the prophets or founders of the path, called Tirthankara practiced and taught the Jain truths. Mahavria was the 24th Tirthankara and also the most important. The life of Mahavira was very spiritual from the start. He had a pensive mind even from early childhood and throughout his life he gave utmost respect to all other living beings and never harmed them. Mahavira is accredited for being the official founder of Jainism. At the age of 30 he gave up a traditional lifestyle in order to find enlightenment and after 13 years he reached spiritual truth. As be began to gain popularity he also gathered followers and soon Jainism was born. He traveled naked and barefoot throughout India to spread his teachings and wherever he went people listened. Mahavira lived from 599-527 BC and is said to have fasted to death, but despite his death his newly budding religion continued to thrive later being supported by several rulers and over 5 million people.
